01. Júzcar — Spain
Júzcar (220 residents) is a town in the province of Málaga, part
of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. In spring 2011,
buildings in the town (including the church and gravestones) were painted blue
to celebrate the premiere of the Smurfs movie. 4,000 litres (1,100 US gal) of
paint was used.
In December 2011, Sony Pictures offered to repaint the town.
Citizens voted to leave the buildings painted blue, as an estimated 80,000
tourists visited in the six months following the repainting. The town normally
sees 300 tourists per year.
